Her elbow leisurely rests on a luxurious lacquer box decorated with gold sakura and stylized streams in blue and gold. In the lacquer box is a collection of more bound books. She wears a simple but refined kimono, a blanket draped over her shoulders. Intimate and peaceful painting, bijin (beautiful women) genre, in Shōen’s romantic gentle style.
With box, inscription reading ‘Ikeda Shōen, picture of a dreaming beauty’ (Ikeda Shōen bijin yume zu).
*Shōen was regarded as one of the most respected female painters of Eastern Japan.Pupil of Mizuno Toshikata 水野年方(1866-1908) and after his passing away became a pupil of Kawai Gyokudō 川合玉堂 (1873-1957), leading Nihonga painter who fused Japanese&Western painting traditions.
