Description: Totsuka戸塚: Masuyama増山of Matsubayaまつはやfrom the series A Tōkaidō Board Game of Courtesans, Fifty-three Pairings in the Yoshiwara (Keisei dōchū sugoroku, Mitate Yoshiwara gojūsan tsui 契情道中双六 見立よしはら五十三対). This series of 55 prints in total combines each resting station along the Tokaidō (the coastal highway connecting Edo with Kyoto) featured in an inset in the print, with a high-ranking Yoshiwara oiran. Pictured here is the stop Totsuka and oiran Masuyama of the Matsubaya brothel. The series is also based on the Japanese board game sugoroku, where sheets of paper were pasted together to form a game board with players throwing dice to move towards the end of the board: in this case the game would start at Nihonbashi (Edo) and end in Kyoto at the Sanjō bridge. Published by Tsutaya Kichizō (Kōeidō) in 8/1825.
