Description: Black lacquer kōgō (incense container) decorated with willow bridge theme executed in raised gold lacquer, with stylized clouds and river. With silver lacquer details en gold nashiji (gold flakes) in the background. Gold flakes on the side. Black undecorated lacquer interior and bottom. This design is based over the famous bridge over the Uji River in southeast Kyoto, a view that re-appears in Japanese arts and is also celebrated in famous literary works such as The Tale of Genji. With original signed box, inscription reads: willow bridge incense container (yanagi bashi kōgō). *Born in Kyoto in 1933, real name: Atsushi. Studied lacquerware under his father, Kawase Sentarō. He has exhibited in many places, such as Nitten, New Japanese crafts, Kyoto crafts art exhibition etc. Authority on Japanese lacquer art, also taught lacquer at Kyoto’s traditional craft University. The Kawase Hyōkan lineage continues and the Hyōkandō shop can be visited in Kyoto.
