Description: Gold lacquer kinrinji shape (lid wider than body) natsume titled Suminoe, literally translated the bay at Sumi[yoshi]. Suminoe is also an old name for Sumiyoshi in southern Osaka, the location of the ancient Sumiyoshi Shrine. It also refers to poem 18 by Fujiwara No Toshiyuki of the famous Hyakunin Isshu (One Hundred Poets, One Poem Each). This natsume refers to the poem, of which the transcription reads: unlike the waves that come up to the shore of Suminoe, even during the night, you seem along the path of dreams to avoid other people's eyes With original signed box, inscription reads: Suminoe maki-e kinrinji. *Lacquer artisan born in Ishikawa prefecture, Kaga city. Was taught lacquerware techniques from his father. Specializes in lacquer utensils for the tea ceremony. He specializes in Yamanaka-nuri, where the natural beauty of the grain of the wood is preserved and highlighted.
