Artist:Ichigo Icchō (1898-1991)
Description: Black lacquered natsume with bevelled edge (fubuki shape), decorated with chrysanthemums in gold and red raised lacquer. Back-drop of leaves and fern in gold lacquer. With original signed box, inscription reads: natsume. *Icchō was born in the Ishikawa prefecture. During his lifetime he quickly became one of the top valued craftsman of Wajima-nuri lacquerware. Icchō specializes in maki-e; a technique to decorate lacquerware by sprinkling gold or silver dust particles over wet lacquer design. Especially his natsume are now held in high esteem. The characteristics of his work are his strong sense of colour, - with sometimes quite bold usage of vibrant colors- , and composition.
Signed: on bottom of natsume ‘made by Icchō’ (Icchō saku), same on cloth and on box, box also features artist’s sead reading Icchō.
