Description: Black lacquer jūbako (重箱, lit. ‘tiered boxes’ to hold and present food) decorated with chrysanthemum motif in gold lacquer all over. The jūbako consists of five stacked boxes, five black lids to compartimentalize and stack the boxes and two gold lacquered lids with the chrysanthemum motif. Interior of red lacquer. Intricate design executed in chinkin-bori (沈金彫 gold-inlaid carving ). A pattern is incised into a lacquer surface, after which raw lacquer is rubbed into the grooves. This function as an adhesive for the gold dust or gold leaves pressed into the etched areas. With box, inscription reads: five-tiered jūbako (go-dan jūbako).
