Artist:Saitō Seisaku (1921-2009)
Description: Painting on paper, carp swimming upstream done in ink and gold paint. With original box: lid reads carp (koi 鯉), inner lid signed by the artist ‘Seisaku’ with artist seal reading ‘Seisaku’. Saitō Seisaku was born in Tonami (Toyama prefecture). In 1954 his work was first accepted to the Nitten exhibition, he exhibited at Nitten continuously and in 1996 even became a Nitten judge. In 1955 his work won a prize at the Toyama prefecture exhibition. The following year he became a judge of the Hokuriku exhibition. In 1957 he became a pupil in Kyoto of Nihonga painter Nishiyama Suishō 西山翠嶂 (1879-1958). In 1960 he also became judge for the Toyama prefectural exhibitions. In 1961 he started studying under Nihonga artist Nishiyama Hideo 西山英雄 (1911- 1989) and joined his Nihonga artist art group ‘Hakuto group’ (朴土グループ). In 1971 he became the president of the Nihonga association, in 1982 also of the Toyama Fine Arts Association. In 1990 Seisaku received the Order of the Sacred Treasure.
