Artist:Hirai Baisen (1889-1969)
Description: Painting on silk, titled ‘Mountain village after rain’ (Sansō ugo山荘雨後). A mountainous landscape, in the middle a small cottage is pictured, with one figure looking out the window. With double box, inner box titled on the lid ‘Mountain village after rain’ (Sansō ugo山荘雨後). Inner lid signed ‘made by Baisen’ with artist seal. *Hirai Baisen was born in Kyoto, and graduated the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts in 1906. While most other artists studied under well-known artists, Baisen started his art career working independently. His style and thematic choices are diverse, and this versatility and the quality of his works were held in high esteem. He exhibited at the Bunten from 1907 to 1931. During the latter half of his career his work fell out of favour and seems to lack the inventiveness of his earlier works.
