Artist:Maehara Toyosaburō
Description: Painting on silk picturing Fukuda Chiyo-ni (Kaga no Chiyo) (1703-1775). She was a Japanese poet, famous for her haiku focusing on the natural world. After the passing of her parents, she became a Buddhist nun at fifty-two. She aimed even more than before to live a simple humble life in harmony with nature. This painting seems to refer to one of her best known haiku 'The Morning Glory'. ''Morning glory! the well bucket-entangled, I ask for water'' Chiyo-ni is pictured carrying a water bucket, dressed in a modest but elegant kimono, admiring the morning glory growing near the well. With original box. On the lid it reads 'Kaga no Chiyo'(加賀の千代), inner lid is signed Toyosaburō (豊三郎) with artist seal.
