Artist:Morikawa Chikashige 守川周重 (act. 1869-82).
Description: A dynamic triptych featuring the actor Ichikawa Sadanji on the right as Watanabe Genjitsuna and the actor Onoe Kikugoro V as the Ibaraki Demon on the left, from the play Ibaraki. Published by Fukuda Kumajirō in 1883. The play Ibaraki is based on the figure of the historical samurai Watanabe no Tsuna (953-1025). One of his enemies was Ibaraki-doji, demon of the Rashomon gate. After Watanabe cut off the demon's arm in battle, he took it home as a trophy. A while later an elderly aunt visited him. She asks Watanabe if she can see the limb. While he removes it from its case, the woman transforms in Ibaraki, grabs the arm and flees. This moment is captured in this triptych, with the case falling over and the arm snatched by the disguised Ibaraki.
