The kabuki play this triptych references to is 'Hirakana Seisuki'. In act III, Higuchi Jirō Kanemitsu pretends to be boatman Matsuemon. He ends up in a boat with three aggresive boatmen that see through his act and try to arrest him. Higuchi defeats them by beating them to death with an oar.
