Accompanying text on the role of the farmer in Japanese society. As artist reminisces, ‘commoners’ is now used to refer to the masses, but used to refer to farmers in Japan because there were so many of them. Even so, they had to work hard and their lives were often spent in poverty. Sanzō: ‘It seems that the lives of farmers have changed considerably these days, which stems from the recognition of the hard work they should naturally be compensated for.’
