The poet-courtier Fujiwara no Sadaie (also known as Fujiwara no Teika, 1162-1241) is pictured fast asleep at a vigil at the Sumiyoshi shrine in Settsu. In his dreams Sumiyoshi no Kami, patron of poetry appears before him. Teika is known as one of the four greatest poets of Japan, who also compiled the famous Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, the ‘Little Treasury of One Hundred Poets One Poem Each’: a classical Japanese anthology of one hundred Japanese waka poems by one hundred poets.
