Description: No. 3, Sakanoue Tamuramaro (758-811) in a rain of arrows,from the series Mirrors of famous commanders of great Japan (Dai Nippon meishō kagami). Published by Funazu Chūjirō in 1876. Tamamuro was on the point of defeat in a campaign against the Ebisu barbarians in the Seizaka mountains when he prayed to Buddha. The gods of the Four Quarters sent a storm of arrows to come to his aid, helping him to defeat the enemy.
