Left farmer Sakura Sōgorō 佐倉 惣五郎 is depicted, also known as Kiuchi Sōgorō (木内 惣五郎), played by the actor Ichikawa Udanji I 初代 市川右團次. On the right 幻し長吉 played by the actor Ichikawa Kodanji V 5代目] 市川 小團次. This is the scene: the Ferryman's Hut at Inbanuma Marsh (印旛沼渡し小屋の場Inbanuma Watashikoya no Ba ) from the play Sakura Giminden (The Tale of the Martyr of Sakura). While it might look like Sōgorō is being attacked, this could be referring to the scene in which boatman Jinbei helps Sōgōrō escape my cutting the ferry loose (in defiance of the local edict and endangering himself with capital punishment).
Several kabuki plays revolve around Sakura Sōgorō: a village headman who sacrificed himself begging the shogun in 1652 to save him and his fellow farmers of starvation.
