Description: Triptych titled ‘Picture of the Imperial Diet Building going up in flames’ (Teikoku gijidō enjō no zu 帝國議事堂炎上之圖). (National Diet Building). Published by Inoue Kichijirō (Teikadō) on January 29th, 1891. This triptych was very quickly made, as the incident of the fire took place during the dawn of 20 January 1891. The Chief Secretary of the House of Representatives announced a short circuit to be the cause of the fire. At the time during the ‘civilization and enlightenment’ period, electrical lights made their debut, but this incident made the public filled with fear and the Tokyo Electric Light Company saw their sales drop sharply.

Condition:Very good impression and colour, margins slightly soiled. A thin spot in top margin of righthand sheet and in left bottom corner of central sheet.
