Description: No. 44, Takegawa 竹川 (Bamboo River) , from the series 'Ukiyo-e Parallels for the Cloudy Chapters of the Tale of Genji' (Genji kumo ukiyoe awase 源氏雲浮世絵合). Daimyō Sakingo Ashikaga Yorikane 左金吾頼兼 standing with his sword drawn at moonlight, after mudering his lover, the Yoshiwara courtesan Takao, depicted by the two locks of hair. She had broken off their affair, after which he, overcome by rage, ended her life. The painful expression and dark clouds capture the emotional disturbance that must have been felt by the daimyō after his rash and fatal decision. Poem in cartouche. Published by Iseya Ichibei in 1845-1846.
