Description: Oban yoko-e plate from the picture book titled 伊達茂夜雨(Datemoyō), referencing to the poetry name Yō 夜雨 of Ichikawa Danjūrō VII. Published in 1849. On the right actor Ichikawa Danjūrō VIII as Arajishi Otokonosuke. The seals above his portrait, from right to left: 'Hachidaime' (Eighth generation), 'Sanshō' 三舛 (his poetry name). His father Ichikawa Danjūrō VII (Ebizō) in the role of Nikki Danjō on the left. Below his portrait are from right to left his poetry name 'Yō 夜雨', a seal reading 'Shichidaime' (Seventh generation), and a seal reading 'Hakuen 白煙' another of his poetry names. In the picture book, Ichikawa Danjūrō VIII is featured playing seven different roles produced at the Kawarazaki theater in the third month of 1849. They come from the play: Date kurabe okuni kabuki' (伊達競阿国戯場). In 1842 Ichikawa Danjūrō VII was exhiled from Edo to Osaka. In 1849 he was allowed to return to Edo. The booklet was commissioned to celebrate Danjūrō VIII visiting his father.
