Description: Actor Nakamura Kichiemon I中村吉右衛門 as Suzugamori Chobei鈴ヶ森の長兵衛 from the series New Versions of Figures on the Stage (Shinpan butai no sugata-e新版舞台之姿絵). Published by Watanabe Shōzaburō in September 1951. Background of silver gray mica, embossing in the paper lantern and white cord, soft pink bokashi around the eyes. The actor Nakamura Kichiemon I (1886-1954) in the role of Banzuin Chobei from the Execution Ground at Suzugamori scene of the play Ukiyozuka Hiyoku no Inazuma (The Floating World's Pattern and Matching Lightning Bolts). Chobei was one of the most famous okotodate (chivalrous commoner or street knight): morally right characters of low rank who resist corruption. Pictured here is how Chobei witness a fight in silence at Suzugamori, the execution grounds outside Edo. The murderer Shirai Gompachi is fighting off a gang hoping to capture him for a reward.
