Description: Triptych titled Collection of Sokutatsu hairstyles (Katsuratsuke sokuhatsu zukai 鬘附束髪圖 會) This triptych offers an interesting insight into Meiji era Japan, where modernization was well underway and Western influence omnipresent. Here Western adaptations have made their way to Japanese female fashion. The women are wearing Victorian style dress and spotting the latest hairstyle called sokuhatsu : consisting of a bun or chignon tied at the back of the head. Published by Hayashi Kichizō in May 1887. Signed: on each sheet Yōshū Chikanobu hitsu, with toshidama seal.
